WordPress has been the standard choice for those needing a website for years. Understandably: it works, it is well-known, and there are endless plugins. But more and more organizations are running into its limits. Slow loading times, security issues, an outdated architecture that is difficult to integrate with other systems. At that point, the question arises: is it time for something else?
For many organizations, a headless CMS is that alternative. But what exactly is it, when is it smart, and when is WordPress just good enough?
WordPress is a so-called monolithic CMS: the place where you manage content and the place where that content is displayed are linked. The database, the logic, and the frontend are woven into one system, as it were.
That works fine for a simple website. But as soon as you want to display content on multiple channels, integrate with other systems, or have high demands on speed and security, that interconnection becomes a burden. You depend on an ecosystem of plugins, each with its own updates, conflicts, and vulnerabilities. And the bigger the site, the slower the whole.
A headless CMS cuts the tie. The content is managed in one place but made available via an API to any channel you want: a website, an app, a portal, a digital screen. You build the frontend separately, in the technology that suits best.
The result is a system that is faster, better secured, and much more flexible. Editors work in a straightforward environment, developers build the frontend at their discretion, and the two do not get in each other's way.
Smartshore is an official partner of both Strapi and Storyblok. They are both headless CMSs, but they are not interchangeable.
Strapi is open source and self-hosted. You have full control over your data, infrastructure, and content structure. Ideal for organizations with their own development team or specific technical requirements, such as custom integrations or strict data needs. Smartshore is the only official Strapi partner in the Netherlands.
Storyblok is a SaaS solution with a powerful visual editor. Editors can edit content while seeing a live preview, without technical knowledge. This makes Storyblok especially suitable for marketing and communication teams that want to work independently.
The choice between the two depends on who works with the system, how much control you want over the infrastructure, and how complex the integrations are.
WordPress is not inherently the wrong choice. For a simple corporate website with limited integrations, a small team, and low traffic volume, WordPress is still a great option. The threshold is low, and the ecosystem is vast.
But as soon as one of the following situations applies, it's worth seriously considering headless:
You want to display content on multiple channels. You run into the performance of your current site. You want to connect with a CRM, e-commerce platform, or other external systems. You have strict requirements for security or data storage. You want to determine the frontend technology yourself.
Migrating from WordPress to a headless CMS is no small step, but it's not insurmountable either. The content structure is reorganized, the frontend is built in modern technology like Next.js or Nuxt.js, and the integration with external systems is tailor-made.
Smartshore has performed this migration multiple times. We always first look at what the current situation is, which CMS fits best and what the most pragmatic route is. Sometimes it's a full migration, sometimes it's a hybrid approach.
WordPress has a good reputation for a reason. But for organizations that are growing, digitizing, or have higher demands on performance and flexibility, headless CMSs like Strapi and Storyblok are often a better foundation for the long term.
