Identity Access Management with FusionAuth

What is FusionAuth, and why are more and more organizations choosing it?

Almost every application needs it: a way to let users log in, manage access, and secure identities. Yet authentication is one of the areas where organizations most often fall short. Building it in-house takes too much time, off-the-shelf solutions fall short, and large identity providers come with vendor lock-in that ends up costing you dearly later on.

FusionAuth is a platform that provides a concrete solution to this. At Smartshore, we’re seeing a clear increase in the number of organizations choosing this solution, and for good reason.

What is FusionAuth?

FusionAuth is an identity and access management platform, also known as CIAM (Customer Identity and Access Management). It manages everything related to user identities:

  • Registration

  • Password management

  • Multi-factor authentication (MFA)

  • Single sign-on (SSO)

  • Access rights.

The platform supports common standards such as OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect (OIDC), and SAML. This means it integrates with virtually any modern application or service, regardless of the technology stack you use.

FusionAuth is available as a cloud solution but can also be fully self-hosted. The latter is an important factor for many organizations, especially in the public sector.

What sets FusionAuth apart from alternatives?

There are several identity platforms on the market. Auth0, Okta, Keycloak, and Azure AD B2C are names you come across regularly. So why are more and more organizations choosing FusionAuth?

A few reasons we often hear in practice:

Full control over your data.

With many cloud-only solutions, you have limited control over where user data is stored and how it is processed. FusionAuth gives you the choice: host it yourself on your own infrastructure, in a private cloud, or in a data center of your choice. For organizations that work with privacy-sensitive data or must comply with the GDPR, this is no small matter.

Transparent and predictable costs.

Platforms like Auth0 and Okta charge per user. With large numbers of active users, those costs can quickly add up. FusionAuth uses a licensing model that does not scale with the number of users, making it more financially predictable.

No vendor lock-in.

Because FusionAuth operates based on open standards and enables self-hosted installations, you are not dependent on a single vendor. You retain the freedom to migrate, customize, or expand.

Extensive functionality without complexity.

FusionAuth offers advanced features such as breached password detection, passkeys, custom login flows, theming, and comprehensive audit logs. At the same time, the platform is designed to be quickly implemented by developers.

When is FusionAuth a good choice?

FusionAuth is a good fit for organizations that work with a customer portal, a member environment, an employee application, or a platform where multiple user groups with different access rights operate. Examples include municipalities, healthcare institutions, educational platforms, SaaS companies, and membership organizations.

  1. Specifically, FusionAuth is a good option if you are dealing with one or more of the following situations:

  2. You want to move away from custom-built authentication that is difficult to maintain.

  3. You are dealing with multiple applications that need to share a single central login environment via SSO.

  4. You work with personal data and want full control over where it is stored.

  5. Your user base is growing, and you don’t want the costs of your identity provider to scale accordingly.

FusionAuth and the Public Sector

For government organizations and other public institutions, data sovereignty plays a major role. The ability to run FusionAuth entirely within your own infrastructure, combined with support for MFA and detailed audit logs, makes the platform suitable for environments with high security requirements.

Smartshore is an official FusionAuth partner, and works closely with the platform, and has the expertise to implement, integrate, and manage FusionAuth within broader software solutions.

Authentication is not a side issue

It’s tempting to view authentication as a technical detail that can be addressed later. In practice, it’s one of the components that has the greatest impact on user experience, security, and the manageability of your application. A wrong choice early in the process costs a lot of time and money to reverse later.

For many organizations, FusionAuth is the solution that is flexible enough for the future, secure enough to meet today’s requirements, and concrete enough to get started quickly.
